In 1928, the Swiss- born French architect Le Corbusier created some investigational furniture designs in partnership with his cousin Peirre Jeanneret and French interior designer Charlotte Perriand. These designs were acknowledge for incorporating the modernist qualities typically attributed to modern architecture, thus creating them one of the primary model of what is now called as modern furniture design. Among these designs by Le Corbusier is the LC 3 Sofa.

Even if Le Corbusier was one said to have clever remark that sofas are bourgeois, the LC 3 Sofa. One of a handful of sofa styles by Le Corbusier, the Le Corbusier Sofa or LC3 is a two-seater sofa inspired by Le Corbusier’s earlier Grand Comfort armchair style. The sofa is essentially comprised of a sturdy external frame of chrome-plated tubular steel that outlines the loose cushions that work as the sofa’s seat and backrest. Before time production runs of the sofa were also fixed with an interior spring system, though this was discarded in sofas made after the late 1950’s.

Debatably the most prominent attribute of the LC 3 Sofa is that its frame is located on the outside rather than on the inner part as traditional sofa designs obtain. Believing that customary design is old, Le Corbusier placed the frame of the sofa exterior to showcase its magnificent structure to the onlooker. And to complement its tinny frame, the sofa’s polyurethane and natural down cushions are covered with black or white upholstery created from either leather of fabric.

The Le Corbusier No. 3 Sofa is a set of the LC 3 furniture compilation which also includes the LC 3 Meridienne and the LC3 Ottoman. A three-seater type of the LC 3 Sofa was also produced, although it is not part of the original collection and was based on several sketches Perriand made at Le Corbusier’s studio.

Though various individuals recognize him today as a highest pioneer in modern architecture, the Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier also made modern furniture. In 1928, Le Corbusier (whose true name is Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris) worked with French interior designer Charlotte Perriand, making with numerous tubular steel furniture that were afterwards featured at the historic Salon d’ Automne art display in Paris in 1929. Together with these furniture designs was the Le Corbusier LC3 Sofa.

Le Corbusier once said that sofas are “bourgeois”, which is amazing regarding that his LC3 Sofa is one of his most popular works. One of several sofa styles he completed in his career, the Le Corbusier LC3 Sofa is a two-seater sofa composed of an outside steel frame and unfastened cushions as its seat, back, and arm rests. Different from those seen in conventional sofa works, the LC3 Sofa’s tubular steel frame is on the exterior and draw round the shape of the couch. The border is also coverd with a level of chrome, matte black enamel, or silky finish to make it show up . The cushions, on the other hand, are packed with polyurethane, polyester or original down feathers and covered with rich black leather or fabric.

The Le Corbusier LC3 Sofa is a set of Le Corbusier’s LC3 furniture group, which also consist of an armchair and “meridienne” chair design. In addition, a three-seater type of the LC3 Sofa has also been made and recently been included in the LC3 collection. This three-sitter version is based partly on Le Corbusier’s “Grand Comfort” armchair style as well as from many sketches by Perriand.

The Le Corbusier LC3 Sofa was primarily put into production in the 1930s up to 1959, when the whole Le Corbusier furniture group were re-introduced with various minor developments. Then in 1964, the designer furniture company Cassina S.p.A acquired the privileges from Le Corbusier himself to produce his works. Today Cassina remains as the highest reproducer of the LC3 Sofa and the rest of Le Corbusier furniture works, though reproductions from other manufacturers are also generally available.

Regardless of being lesser recognized than Le Corbusier or Mies van der Rohe, no one could ignore that the Irish stylist Eileen Grayis among the greatest designers of the modern period. Acknowledged as one the top founders of the Modern design movement in the early 20th century, Eileen Gray were among the first to go beyond the conventions of traditional design and pave the way to what is now recognized as the modern furniture style.

Born Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray on August 1878 at Enniscorthy, Ireland, Eileen Gray was the youngest child of the well-to-do Gray clan. James Maclaren Gray, Eileen’s father, was an amateur painter and would often advise her fascination for the arts. In 1896, Gray was given to the well known Slade School of Fine Art of the University College London until her father’s death in 1900. Gray continued her studies at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi in Paris, but returned to London in 1905 to take care of her mother. It was during her residence at London where she met and knew the art of lacquerwork from Seizo Sugawara, a known Japanese lacquer restorer working at the Exposition Universelle in France. Gray’s five years of study under Sugawara would later established with the famous “Block Screen” lacquered wall panels she introducedat Rue de Lota apartment in Paris in 1917.

Possibly the works that Eileen Gray is best known for today is her Bibendum Chair. Made between the years 1917 and 1921, the Bibendum Chair is a red leather chair made up of a series of padded tubes. Gray {called|named] the chair after the Bibendum company mascot of the Michelin tire company, which had a similar rounded shape. The Bibendum chair is noted by many not only for its unconventional design but also for being quite comfortable to use, a feature made to the chair’s interwoven rubber support at the seat and Gray’s plan of soft leather as upholstery.
